Buffy helped me survive years of mental illness and unhappiness in my adolescence and young adulthood. It offered me a stability and consistency that was so lacking in my real life, and unlike any of the real people around me, Buffy, Giles, Xander and Willow acknowledged that monsters ARE real, but more importantly that monsters CAN be beaten. And even though they were all fictional, I think I’ll always be grateful to them for that.
